PCTFE CNC Machining | Cryogenic & Semiconductor Parts
Polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) — commonly known as Kel-F® or Neoflon® — is a high-performance fluoropolymer that offers the lowest moisture absorption and gas permeability of any plastic. It is the preferred material for cryogenic seals, valve seats, and semiconductor components where dimensional stability is critical.
PCTFE Material Properties
| Property | Value | vs PTFE |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture Absorption | <0.01% | Lower than PTFE (0.01%) |
| Gas Permeability | Lowest of any plastic | 10x lower than PTFE |
| Max Service Temperature | 150°C | Lower than PTFE (260°C) |
| Cryogenic Performance | Down to -240°C | Excellent |
| Tensile Strength | 35-40 MPa | Higher than PTFE (25-30) |
| Compressive Strength | 40-50 MPa | Much higher than PTFE |
| Dimensional Stability | Excellent | Better than PTFE |
| Optical Clarity | Transparent to translucent | Unique among fluoropolymers |
PCTFE Machining Capabilities
- Tolerances: +/-0.01mm achievable
- Processes: CNC milling, turning, drilling, sawing
- Surface finish: Ra 0.8 µm as-machined
- Special Note: PCTFE is softer than PEEK; sharp tools and proper fixturing are essential to prevent deformation
PCTFE vs PTFE: Key Differences
While both are fluoropolymers, PCTFE offers superior dimensional stability, lower gas permeability, and better compressive strength than PTFE. PTFE excels at higher temperatures (260°C vs 150°C) and has a lower coefficient of friction. Choose PCTFE when gas barrier properties, low-temperature performance, or dimensional stability under load are critical.
PCTFE Industry Applications
- Cryogenics: LNG valve seats, cryogenic pump seals, liquid oxygen components
- Aerospace: Seals, gaskets, valve components, electrical insulation
- Semiconductor: Chemical handling, wafer processing, barrier components
- Chemical Processing: Sight glasses, valve seats, gaskets for aggressive media

Design Notes for PCTFE Machined Parts
PCTFE is often selected when the part must seal at low temperature, control gas permeability, or keep stable dimensions in cryogenic and semiconductor equipment. For CNC machining, the most important design rule is to avoid thin unsupported walls around sealing lips. If a groove, valve seat, or insulating sleeve needs a sharp edge, we normally recommend adding a small relief radius and confirming the sealing surface with a drawing callout instead of relying on a molded-style corner.
Typical PCTFE parts include cryogenic valve seats, pump seals, sensor insulators, chemical handling spacers, and semiconductor fluid-control components. For tight-tolerance features, we review wall thickness, clamping direction, and inspection datum before machining because PCTFE can deform if the fixture pressure is too high.
PCTFE Tolerance and Inspection Guidance
- Standard CNC tolerance: +/-0.05 mm for most milled or turned PCTFE features.
- Tighter tolerance: +/-0.02 mm may be possible on short, well-supported features after drawing review.
- Critical sealing faces: specify flatness, surface finish, and inspection datum clearly on the drawing.
- Small holes and thin rings: allow enough material around the feature to prevent distortion during clamping.

PCTFE Quote and Delivery Checklist
For PCTFE RFQs, the most useful information is the application temperature, working medium, sealing face requirement, and annual quantity. If the component will contact oxygen, fuel, specialty gas, or aggressive chemicals, note that on the drawing or RFQ email so we can review cleaning and packaging requirements. For export orders, we can provide dimensional inspection photos, material certificate details when available, and protective packing for small precision rings or valve components.
For first-article inspection, we can mark the drawing with measured values for sealing diameters, slot widths, and datum-related features. This is especially useful for PCTFE parts used in valve assemblies, cryogenic equipment, and gas-control systems where a small dimensional change can affect sealing performance.
